Our
mission is to improve the functional and informational literacy of children and
young adults through multiple styles of engagement.
Listen4Literacy hopes to engage young readers through listening to stories
that are interpretively read aloud. By
acclimating young readers to the diction and rhythm of the written language as
it diverges from the cadence and vernacular leanings of the spoken word, we
hope to increase the reader’s command and comprehension of the stories.
Listen4Literacy also seeks to encourage tangential learning about
history, culture, allegory, and vocabulary present in the stories through story
primers and prompted discussions for each reading.
~ Robert C. P. Steiner
“Long before I
wrote stories, I listened for stories. Listening for them is something more
acute than listening to them. I suppose it's an early form of participation in
what goes on. Listening children know stories are there. When their elders sit
and begin, children are just waiting and hoping for one to come out, like a
mouse from its hole.”
~ Eudora Welty
